Tigers sweep on road at Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE -- For the first time this season, Fort Scott High School's boys and girls won games on the same night. The girls took a 50-18 verdict in Southeast Kansas League play over Coffeyville here Tuesday night and the boys followed up with a 55-39 victory.

The girls (2-2 SEK, 3-5 overall) took control with a run that began late in the first quarter and carried over into the early second. Another run, a 17-0 spurt over the late second and early third quarters, created a 30-point margin and removed the tiny bit of doubt that may have remained. The fourth quarter was played with what's becoming known as the "turboclock" (a 30-point lead at any point during the fourth quarter keeps the clock running).

Fort Scott's boys (1-3, 2-6) broke through for their first SEK victory while handing Coffeyville (2-2, 5-4) its first home loss of the season. The Golden Tornado overcame a 7-point halftime deficit to take a one-point lead midway through the third. But the Tigers popped off 8 straight points and never trailed again.

The Tigers held the Golden Tornado (0-4, 0-9) to less than 20 points for the fifth time this season. Kharsyn Dwyer started the first-half run with a basket with 3:45 left in the first that made it 10-6. Kelsie Nelson followed with a 3-point play and Skyelar Brown took a turnover in for a score as the period ended.

Emily Hale made a pair of free throws and Nelson scored in transition early in the second to make it 19-6 with 6:30 left in the second.

Fort Scott scored the last 11 points of the half, the last four from Jenny Denton. She took a steal in for a layup at the buzzer to extend the margin to 36-12.

The Tigers outscored Coffeyville 13-2 in the third to make it 49-14. With the mercy rule in effect and subs coming in to play out the game, Fort Scott scored only one point in the fourth.

Madison Cook led the Tigers with 10 points while Brown finished with 9. Only five players scored for Coffeyville, which has lost 11 consecutive games going back to last season, and none of them scored more than 4 points.

Fort Scott boys 55, Coffeyville 39.

For the third time this season, Coffeyville failed to reach 40 points. Meanwhile, the Tigers, averaging about 44 points a game at this time last week, have scored 125 in their last two games (a 62.5 ppg average).

Jessie Jones, coming off a 23-point night last Friday against Pittsburg, scored 20 against the Nado. His back-to-back 3-point goals in the third reignited the Tigers.

Trailing 8-4 with about a minute left in the first, C.J. Horton's first high-school varsity basket, a 3-pointer with 45 seconds to go, broke a Coffeyville scoring run. Then Jones made it 9-8 at the end of the period with a basket with 10 seconds to go. Grant Goldston scored the first 5 of the second period to extend the margin to 6 points.

Jones and Goldston scored consecutively in the final 26 seconds of the half to make it 26-19 going into the locker room.

The Tornado scored 9 of the first 10 points of the second half, going on front for just the second time in the game, 28-27, on Jaylen Logan's basket with about three minutes to go.

Jones hit the first of his consecutive triples with 2:19 to go to put the Tigers back in front. Alec Michaud scored a layup to make it 35-28 before Kameron Wilson scored for Coffeyville to close out the quarter.

The Tigers put the game away with a run that started with less than three minutes to go. Michaud hit a 3-pointer, then scored off a turnover. Jones followed with a layup that made it 50-34.

Goldston finished with 14 points for the Tigers, who made 7 3-point field goals. Michaud added 8. Wilson led Coffeyville with 15 points and Logan added 9. But only three other Coffeyville players scored.

Fort Scott's junior varsity doubled up Coffeyville, 60-30, as Michaud and Carter Goldston each scored 12 points and Noah Reynolds added 10.

Fort Scott's teams host Independence in Southeast Kansas League play Friday night. The Bulldogs swept Chanute on the road Tuesday night.
