Tiger boys break into win column

COLUMBUS -- Fort Scott High's boys picked up their first victory of the season in five tries here Friday night, dominating Columbus in a non-league contest, 62-32.

The Tigers began each half with 16-2 runs in breaking a six-game losing streak for the program going back to last season. Columbus (1-5) has scored a total of 57 points in its last two games, losing to Coffeyville by a 58-25 score Tuesday night. The Titans' only victory this season came over Chetopa, a Class 1A school.

Four different players scored as the Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Jessie Jones started things off with a 3-point goal. Then Grant Goldston, Matt Campbell and Jessie Lawrence each scored baskets.

Fort Scott went into the second quarter with an 18-7 lead. It was 31-16 at the half.

The Tigers scored the first 12 points of the second half with Lawrence making a pair of 3-pointers. Ryan Thomas scored 4 there and added another 2 as the Tigers pushed the lead to 47-18 with about three minutes left to go.

The fourth quarter began with a 54-24 lead and a running clock.

Jones led the Tigers with 12 points followed by Thomas with 11 and Lawrence and Campbell with 10 each. Coltin Lawrence led Columbus with 8 points.

The Tiger junior varsity defeated Columbus 67-46 as Noah Reynolds scored 16 points and Alec Michaud added 12.

Although the Tigers (2-3) were the first team to score more than 30 points on Columbus this season, the Titans remained unbeaten behind a dominating third-quarter performance.

Skyelar Brown brought Fort Scott within 20-19 at the half with a 3-point goal. But the Titans (6-0) outscored the Tigers 15-4 in the third, scoring 13 of the last 15.

Abby Schoech led Columbus with 20 points, making four 3-point goals. Madison Cook made 11 of 13 free throws as she led the Tigers with 21.

Fort Scott is idle until Jan. 3 when it visits Labette County.
