Comets blaze by Tiger boys in third

ame out of the locker room blazing hot Tuesday night, outscoring Fort Scott High's boys 13-3 in the first 4:15 to take control of what was a close game and went on to a 54-32 win in the Southeast Kansas League opener for both teams.

Both teams were looking for thier first win of the season. Fort Scott went 0-3 at the Willard Tri-State Classic while Chanute was 0-3 last week in a tournament at Hesston.

Jordan Hall's jumper put the Tigers ahead 6-4 with exactly two minutes to go in the first quarter. But the Blue Comets scored the last 6 points, the final 4 coming from Mason Manbeck. Chanute never trailed again.

Fort Scott was able to get within 2 points several times in the second but needed Matt Campbell's basket with 21 seconds left to get within 20-16 at the break.

Josh Miller led the charge for Chanute in the third, scoring 9 of his game-high 21 points during the opening run that saw Chanute up 33-19 with 3:43 to go. The Comets made 8 of 12 field goals in the period as they boosted the lead to 41-26.

Grant Goldston, who led the Tigers with 14 points, made a 3-pointer from deep in the left wing with 5:37 to go in the fourth to bring Fort Scott within 44-32. It turned out to be the Tigers' last score.

The Tigers will look to break into the win column Friday night when they play at Columbus.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Fort Scott's junior varsity team defeated Chanute, 55-38, as Nick Lawrence scored 13 points and Carter Goldston added 10.

FRESHMEN -- Tiger freshmen subdued the Comets, 55-24. C.J. Horton led the way with 16 points followed by Drew Rhoades with 13 and Bryce Black with 11.

JV Tigers split pair in Iola tourney, win title

IOLA -- Fort Scott High's junior varsity boys lost their first game here on Saturday to Iola, 55-48, suffering their first loss of the season in the second game of the Iola Tournament. However, they fought back to beat Burlington, 37-22, in the final game later in the day.

The Tigers finished 2-1 in the tourney but won the championship on a tie-breaker after two other teams finished with the same record.

Carter Goldston scored 16 points to lead Fort Scott in the loss to Iola while Noah Reynolds scored 15.

Freshmen boys win LCHS tourney

ALTAMONT -- Fort Scott High's freshmen boys' basketball team won the Labette County Tournament here over the weekend. Thursday, the Tigers defeated Galena, 65-38, in the first round. Saturday, they rolled by Frontenac, 71-38, and beat Labette County, 65-53.
