Greyhound men control CMU JV

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Fort Scott Community College's men controlled the pace Tuesday night in rolling past the Central Methodist University junior varsity, 62-33, at Arnold Arena.

Saturday, playing a fellow junior-college Division II team for just the second time this season, the Greyhounds lost at Penn Valley, 100-70.

The 33 points the Greyhounds (6-8) allowed on Tuesday were the fewest by a Michael Cook-coached team. The Eagles scored the first and last baskets of the first half but managed just 10 points in between them.

CMU opened the game with a 3-pointer, but the 'Hounds scored the next 12 points over the course of seven minutes. The game wasn't a blowout as much as it was a slow burn, with Fort Scott in control throughout. Dametrius Walker scored 12 of his team-leading 19 points in the first half.

A 19-2 run late in the first half made it 31-11 with 1:20 remaining. Fort Scott also scored 31 points in the second half.

Anthony Cerda added 8 points for the 'Hounds, who saw 10 players score. Walker also had 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and 2 blocks.

Saturday: Penn Valley 100, Fort Scott 70.

Fort Scott trailed by only three points at the half, 45-42, but were outscored by 27 in the second half at Kansas City, Mo.

Only seven players went into the game for the Scouts (8-4) but six scored in double figures and no one scored less than 7. Penn Valley's bench outscored Fort Scott's 35-12.

Both teams shot about 50 percent from the field, the 'Hounds making 23 of 46 shots and the Scouts going 36 for 71. Penn Valley outrebounded Fort Scott, 36-21.

Walker led Fort Scott with 26 points while Tyler Zinn added 17. Walker also had 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals.

James Byrd led Penn Valley with 22 points followed by Ramar Brown off the bench with 20. Austin Johnson added 16, Chris Englebert 15 and Jeremiah Warren 11.

Brown and Englebert, the Scouts' only bench players, combined to make 14 of 22 field-goal tries.

Fort Scott plays in a classic at Southeast Nebraska this weekend.
