'Hounds get stonger in each set of sweep

Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team swept Allen in Jayhawk Conference-Division II play Wednesday night at Arnold Arena, winning each set by a wider margin. The 17th-ranked Greyhounds won 25-22, 25-15, 25-9 on Dig Pink Night for breast cancer awareness and fundraising.

Fort Scott is tied for fifth place in the conference at 4-3 with a 23-7 overall mark going into a weekend invitational at Lincoln Land, Ill.. Kansas City Kansas is tied with the 'Hounds while Allen (0-7, 5-22) is tied for last place in the 10-team division with Labette.

Allen came out inspired in the first set and managed to rally to a 20-20 tie. Fort Scott scored 5 of the last 7 sparked by a Brette Moore kill. Megan Turner got the last point by tipping the ball into an open area.

Allen led the second set briefly, going out 3-1. But Turner got a kill to give the 'Hounds the serve at 13-10 to spark a 7-1 run that the Red Devils could not overcome. Back-to-back blocks by Bri Bogan finished out that set.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set. Allen got within 10-6 but a kill by Michaela Pfaff sparked Fort Scott to a 15-3 run that ended the set. Bogan's kill off a free ball at the net made it 14-7, starting a 6-0 stretch within the run.

Moore finished with 16 kills to lead the Greyhounds. Turner had 6 and Kayln Beel had 5. Michey Trimble handed out 37 assists and Katie Gorman came up with 10 digs while Trimble and Heather Huesman each had 5.

Friday, Fort Scott was set to face Southeast, Neb., and Parkland, Ill. (38-2), the No. 1-ranked team in Division II. Saturday, the 'Hounds will face No. 4 Catawba Valley (31-3) and No. 5 Lincoln Land (27-7).

Wednesday night, the Greyhounds will play their home finale against Kansas City. Play will begin at 6:30 p.m.
