Greyhounds rise in poll, beat Labette in conference play

PARSONS -- Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team swept Labette in Jayhawk Conference-Division II play here Wednesday night, 28-26, 25-15, 28-26.

The Greyhounds improved to 2-0 in conference play and 8-2 overall. Labette dropped its conference opener and stands at 6-7 overall.

Megan Turner led Fort Scott with 13 kills while also picking up 14 digs and serving a pair of aces. Bri Bogan had 9 kills. Mickey Trimble handed out 35 assists. Katie Gorman led in digs with 25 while Heather Huseman had 14.

Earlier in the day, Fort Scott found it had moved up four spots in the NJCAA Division II national poll from 14th to 11th despite two losses to ranked teams at an invitational at Northeast, Neb., over the weekend. The Greyhounds received 66 points in the voting. Parkland, Ill., is the unanimous No. 1 team with a 10-1 record while Glendale, Ariz., is No. 3 and Jayhawk Conference rival Kansas City is No. 3. Three other conference members are ranked -- Johnson County at No. 5, Cowley at No. 16 and Coffeyville, who the Greyhounds defeated at home last week, down from No. 6 to No. 18. Highland received votes.

The Greyhounds play at an invitational in Coffeyville this weekend. They'll face Longview and Southeast, Neb. tonight and Labette and Independence Saturday. Monday, they'll play St. Mary University's junior varsity at home beginning at 6 p.m. in Arnold Arena.
