Saturday, April 9, 2016

Fort Scott High School's baseball team had to settle for a split with Southeast Kansas League rival Pittsburg at Dave Regan Stadium Tuesday night. The Purple Dragons used a 6-run sixth inning to take the opener 9-4. The Tigers prevailed in game two 3-1.

Fort Scott (1-1 SEK, 2-2 overall) led 3-0 after one. Kaleb DeLaTorre led off with a single to left, Jeron Poyner drew a walk and Grant Goldston was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Carter Young hit a sacrifice fly to score DeLaTorre. Poyner moved to third, then Goldston stole second. Poyner scored on a wild pitch and Goldston came around when the catcher couldn't retrieve the ball.

It became 4-0 in the second when Tyler Gorman singled to left, advanced to second on Marcus Jamison's single, to third on DeLaTorre's hit and scored on a wild pitch.

DeLaTorre was 2 for 4 for the Tigers in the opener.

Fort Scott scored its first run in the second game on the third inning. Kieran Houlihan led off the inning with a triple and scored on Gorman's sacrifice fly.

Pittsburg (2-2, 4-3) tied the score in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half, DeLaTorre led off with a single to left and moved up on a sacrifice by Poyner. Goldston doubled home DeLaTorre to break the tie. Young was intentionally walked but Jamison singled home Goldston with one out.

Houlihan and DeLaTorre each had 2 hits for the Tigers. Young (1-1) went the distance on the hill, allowing an unearned run on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

The Tigers step out of league play this morning to host a baseball triangular at Dave Regan Stadium. Fort Scott will face Louisburg first at 10 a.m. and Ottawa at 1:30.
