Greyhound softball sweeps Neosho
CHANUTE -- Fort Scott Community College's softball team dominated the first game here yesterday on its way to sweep of Neosho County in Jayhawk Conference-Division II play.
Two home runs helped the Greyhounds take the opener 14-1, snapping a four-game losing streak. Fort Scott took the second game 6-5.
Fort Scott (2-4 conference, 13-14 overall) jumped out in front in game one on K.C. Beardsley's grand slam in the top of the first inning. McKenzie Hersh, Kristen Tyler and Taylor Brecheisen all singled to get on base in front of the slam. Cheyenne Brewer's RBI single, which brought Kaylee Bart in, made it 5-0.
Neosho County (5-3, 6-17) scored once in the bottom of the first. But Fort Scott responded with four more in the top of the second.
Herch led off the inning and reached base on catcher's interference. Brecheisen was hit by a pitch with one out. Beardsley singled up the middle to plate Hersh. Brecheisen moved to third on the play.
Beardsley stole second, then Bart plated Brecheisen on a ground out. Smith followed up with a 2-run homer that made it 9-1.
Beardsely brought Tyler in with a third-inning single to make it 10-1. Tyler got on base when she was hit by a pitch with 2 out. The inning was extended further when Brecheisen reached on an error.
Chelsea Snyder was hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth. Brewer drew a walk and the runners moved up on a passed ball. Alex Perez reached base on a fielder's choice as the pitcher had no play on a ball back to her.
With the bases loaded, Hersh singled to score Snyder. Tyler reached base when the shortstop had no play on her grounder, allowing Brewer to score. Brecheisen singled to right, scoring Perez and Hersh to make it 14-1.
Smith (6-6) was the winning pitcher, going all five innings played. She allowed 6 hits and a walk while striking out 3.
Beardseley was 3 for 4 for the Greyhounds with 6 runs batted in. Hersh, Brecheisen and Smith had 2 hits each.
Neosho County scored first in game two, going up 1-0 after two innings. Fort Scott responded with 3 in the top of the third. Snyder led off with a single to right before Brewer bunted her way on. Perez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hersh walked with the bases loaded, forcing Snyder home. Tyler singled to center to plate Brewer and Perez.
The lead grew to 4-1 in the fourth when Brewer scored on a 2-out error. But the Panthers tied the score with 3 in the bottom of the inning.
The Greyhounds took the lead back with a single run in the fifth. They added another in the top of the sixth, which Neosho County matched.
Perez and Brewer were each 2 for 4 at the plate for Fort Scott. Tyler drove in 2 runs.
Amber Sutton (3-5) made it through 4 1/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits. Kiara Boyd earned a save -- a rarity in softball because of the high number of complete games -- going 2 2/3 innings. She allowed one run on 2 hits and struck out 2.
Fort Scott will play a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday against East Central (Mo.). Play begins at 2 p.m. at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex.
