'Hound baseball sweeps Evangel JV

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Fort Scott Community College's baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Evangel junior varsity here Tuesday by scores of 12-8 and 13-1.

The Greyhounds (16-4) had to rally to win the opener, trailing 8-6 going into the top of the seventh. Andrew Tanous singled with 2 out to get things started. Then Danny Crews followed with another single ahead of Jake Biller's 2-RBI double. Gabe Franklin doubled to score Biller with the go-ahead run, then went to third on a wild pitch. Jedd Andrade followed with a run-scoring single to right, scoring Franklin. Nick Banman capped things off with a 2-run home run, his fourth of the season.

Banman went 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles for the Greyhounds and drove in 5 runs. Franklin was 3 for 5.

Connor Leach (3-0) became the winning pitcher when the 'Hounds went ahead in the seventh. He pitched four innings in relief, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and a walk with one strikeout. Avery Boehm pitched the seventh and recorded one strikeout.

Game two went much better for the Greyhounds, who belted out 13 hits. Franklin had 3 of them and 3 RBI. Harrison Whitworth also had 3 hits while Tanous and Crews each had 2.

Malik Sams (1-0) allowed one run on 2 hits and a walk in four innings. He struck out 2. Cayde Williams needed just 5 pitches to get the side out in order in the fifth, the last inning played due to the run rule.

Fort Scott scored 6 runs in the top of the first. Biller led off the game with a walk and Franklin doubled to score Biller. Andrade walked and the runners moved up on a wild pitch. Tanous scored Franklin with a single and Banman brought in 2 runs with a double to center, making it 4-0.

Whitworth followed up with another single, scoring Banman. Whitworth moved to second on a passed ball and scored the last run of the inning on Crews' single to right.

The other 7 runs scored in the top of the fourth, all with 2 out. Whitworth doubled to center and scored on Williams' single. Crews and Taylor Fajardo both hit singles, the latter plating Williams to make it 8-0.

Biller walked on four pitches, loading the bases for Franklin, who drove in 2 runs. Andrade walked, loading the bases again. Tanous then doubled to clear the bases.

Fort Scott steps back into conference play Thursday afternoon with a 1 p.m. Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader at Independence. The teams will meet again at the same time Saturday at Lions Field.
