Lena Maye Johnson, age 86, resident of rural Fort Scott, Kan., died unexpectedly Sunday, March 13, 2016, at her home. She was born July 6, 1929, in Newtonia, Mo., the daughter of George and Mary Weems Wheeler. She married Russell Eugene Johnson on Aug. 12, 1951, in Tulsa, Okla. She graduated from Springfield College with her education degree and Pittsburg State University with a master's degree in library science. Lena taught in Fulton and Prescott, Kan., before teaching and raising her children in Pleasanton, Kan. After moving to Paola, she served as a school librarian for Paola and Hillsdale, Kan. She was a member of several educational organizations, including the Delta Kappa Gamma teacher's society. She was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church. Lena was known to be kind and generous to a fault. She was devoted to her teaching, her family, and her personal relationship with God.

Survivors include her husband Russell of the home; a daughter, Debra and husband Rick Dobrosky; grandchildren, Dana and Lauren Dobrowsky; and a sister, Cora Wheeler. She was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Johnson.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, at the Fulton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery, Fort Scott.
