West Elk rolls by Eagle boys; girls play in Sub-State title game tonight

Saturday, March 5, 2016

SEDAN -- University of Wisconsin football signee Isaiahh Loudermilk scored 16 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 4 shots as second-seeded Howard-West Elk bounced No. 3 seed Uniontown's boys out of the Sedan Class 2A Sub-State Tournament with a 67-42 win in the semifinal here Friday night.

John Heinen also scored 16 points for the Patriots (16-6), who have won nine consecutive games since Loudermilk returned from a mid-season injury.

West Elk led 19-6 after one period and never looked back.

Uniontown's season concluded with a 14-8 record. No information from the Eagles was available at press time.

West Elk will take on top-seeded Sedan (22-0) for the boys' championship tonight at 7:30 p.m. The host Blue Devils ousted Colgan in the other semifinal, 64-44, ending a streak of 14 consecutive seasons that the Panthers had qualified for either the Class 3A or Class 2A State tournaments. Alex Perez led the Devils with 28 points while Noah Chee finished with 23, combining to outscore Colgan on their own 51-44.

More from the girls' win Thursday night.

Shalina Harper led Uniontown with 20 points Thursday night in their 40-30 semifinal victory over Three Rivers League rival Oswego.

The second-seeded Eagles (15-7), winners of 11 of their last 12 games, avenged a 42-30 loss at Oswego in league play in January.

"We were hoping to have the opportunity to play Oswego for a second time," Uniontown head coach Dustin Miller said. "This time, we were focused on what we needed to do and we executed it perfectly."

Uniontown trailed 9-6 after one period but outscored the Indians (12-10) 24-10 over the middle two periods.

Bre Hampton had 9 rebounds for the Eagles, who will take on No. 4 seed Colgan tonight at 6 p.m. in the girls' championship game.

"These girls deserve to play in the championship game," Miller said. "We've got what it takes but it will take everything we've got."

Should the Eagles win, they'll make just their third trip to State and their first since the 2003 Class 2A State Tournament.

Colgan (12-9), which plays mostly Class 4A-Division II and Class 3A schools as a member of the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League, improved to 12-9 with a 43-40 win over top-seeded Sedan (20-2) in Thursday's other semifinal

Sedan led 20-19 at halftime but the Panthers outscored the Blue Devils in the third, 11-8. Colgan held off Sedan in the final moments by making free throws.

NOTES -- The Tribune's friends at the Sedan Prairie Star have recommended arriving at Sedan High School at least 30 to 45 minutes early tonight for the girls' game due to the possibility that Sedan and West Elk fans will arrive early for their game....
