Greyhounds sweep delayed opener from Cloud

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team swept Cloud County by 5-4 scores in both games of a season-opening doubleheader at Dave Regan Stadium Monday.

The teams will meet again today at 1 p.m. for another doubleheader. This series was originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday but moved back due to concerns about the possibility of bad weather.

Fort Scott took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning of the opener by scoring 3 runs. They had 7 hits in the game, led by a 2-for-3 performance by catcher Andrew Tanous, who also drove in 3 runs. Jacob Biller, Jedd Andrade, Nick Banman, Danny Crews and Will Baker also had hits.

Ryan McCullough started on the mound for the Greyhounds, going the first 5 innings and allowing 4 runs -- one earned -- on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Nick Sloan pitched the sixth without incident and Banman moved to the mound and struck out the side in the seventh.

Cloud County led 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of game two. The Greyhounds rallied with Banman's sacrifice fly driving in the game-winning run.

Tanous, Harrison Whitworth, and Gabe Franklin each had 2 hits for Fort Scott.

Avery Boehm got the win in relief. He pitched the final three innings, allowing an unearned run on one hit. He struck out three of the 11 batters he faced.

Fort Scott Community College will use Dave Regan Stadium again this weekend for a four-game series against North Central Missouri. The Saturday doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. with Sunday's twinbill set to get underway at noon.
