Fort Scott girls play Classen tough before falling

FRONTENAC -- Fort Scott High girls' gave top-seeded Oklahoma City-Classen fits here Saturday before falling to the Comets, 45-41, in the fifth-place game of the Kansas Army National Guard Invitational.

Classen fell into consolation when it was upset Thursday by eighth-seeded Blue Springs, Mo., which had just one win coming into the tournament but went on to finish third.

The Tigers (3-8) dominated the first and third quarters while Classen (15-3) controlled the second and the fourth.

Fort Scott scored 7 of the game's first 9 points and held an 11-5 lead after one. The Tigers got their first two baskets from Skyelar Brown, making her second start at the point. All of Classen's points came from Victoria Vickers as her teammates were 0-for-11 from the field.

Maite' Bradford stepped up for Classen in the second and scored the first 6 points of the period, tying the score at 11-11. Emily Hale converted a 3-point play to keep the Tigers ahead again.

Bradford scored the last 4 points of the quarter for Classen, putting them up 25-20. The Tigers scored the first 5 points of the third to tie it again.

Kennedy Williams, then Bradford scored back-to-back for the Comets to make it 29-25 in their favor. But the Tigers scored the last 9 points of the quarter, starting with Brown's transition basket of a Shytanna Reed steal. Hale scored twice during the run, which made it 34-29 going into the final stanza.

Sophie Tractenberg scored a 3-pointer for Classen to open the fourth and Williams drove in to tie the score less than a minute in. Fort Scott scored 6 of the next 8 to go up 40-36 with 2:03 to go.

The rest of the game, Classen outscored the Tigers 9-1 with two free throws by Vickers putting the Comets ahead, 41-40, with 1:09 to go.

Hale and Ashley Cook each scored 12 points for the Tigers. Cook also had 11 rebounds.

Bradford finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Classen while Vickers added 12.

The Tigers step back into Southeast Kansas League play Friday night when they play in Coffeyville. Game time is 6 p.m.
