Ethel Edith Smith, age 83, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Jan. 14,, 2016, at her home in Fort Scott. She was born Feb. 12, 1932, in Stevens County, Minn., the daughter of David George Massner and Carrie Louise Reber Massner. The family later moved to a farm near Hammond, Kan. Ethel graduated from the Fort Scott High School. She married Harvey C. Smith on June 10, 1951, at Hammond. Ethel and Harvey made their home in Wichita for many years before returning to Fort Scott in 1971. Ethel had been employed by the Citizen's National Bank in Fort Scott. They later moved to Prescott, Ariz., in 1984 and Ethel helped at her brother's chiropractic business where she served as office manager and therapist. Following retirement, Ethel fulfilled a life-long dream and became a registered nurse at the age of 64. She and Harvey returned to Fort Scott in 1999. Ethel had been employed by the Medicalodge and by the Fort Scott school system as a medical aide. She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church. Ethel was a member of the Historic Preservation Association of Bourbon County and had helped to organize several Homes for the Holidays Tours. She had also served as a CASA and Hospice volunteer.
