Fort Scott Community College's football team might be able to enjoy a happy Homecoming when Independence comes to Frary Field for a 1 p.m. Jayhawk Conference contest Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (1-6 conference, 2-6 overall) broke a six-game losing streak last Saturday with a 36-20 victory over a one-win Garden City squad that has baffled former FSCC head coach Jeff Sims so far this season. Independence comes in at 1-4, 1-7 with its only victory coming at home against Garden City (1-4, 1-7) on September 26. Last Saturday, the Pirates lost at home to Ellsworth (Iowa), 41-23.

Independence averages 17 points per game offensively, worst in the Jayhawk Conference. The Pirates are also last in passing yards per game (129.6) but fourth in rushing (167.0).

Edwin Thomas (5' 8", 185, Fr., Fort Pierce, Fla.) has gained 534 yards on the ground this season and scored a pair of touchdowns. Indy's quarterback, Bryce Gremmel (6' 1", 200, Fr., Sharpsburg, Ga.) is the Pirates' second-leading rusher with 365 yards and has scored nine times.

Gremmel has also passed for 1,022 yards this season, which ranks seventh in an eight-team conference. He's completed only 47 percent of his passes (91 of 193) and has thrown 11 interceptions versus eight touchdowns.

By comparison, Fort Scott freshman quarterback Michael Glass has thrown for 993 yards this season, even though he missed the second half of one game and all of the Ellsworth contest two weeks ago due to injuries. He has completed 63.5 percent of his throws (94 of 148) and averages 165.5 yards per game, which is the third-best in the conference. Gremmel throws for an average of 127.8 yards per game.

Greyhound running back Devin Taylor could be back on track if last week's 167-yard, 2-touchdown performance is any indication. Taylor averaged over 5 yards a carry last week after averaging about 3.8 previously. He has 689 yards (86.1 YPG, fourth in the KJCCC) and 11 touchdowns for the season.
