Tigers roll by Chanute in District 4 opener

CHANUTE -- Carter Young rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns here Friday night as Fort Scott High's football team easily won its Class 4A-Division I District 4 opener over Chanute, 58-13, at the Chanute Community Sports Complex.

The other District 4 game was also a laugher as Paola crushed Labette County at home, 55-14.

Fort Scott finished with 366 yards rushing on 51 carries and had 498 yards in total offense. The Tigers have won 41 consecutive games in which they have gained at least 400 yards in total offense and 36 straight when they rush for at least 300.

There was not much scoring in the first quarter as each team went on long drives. Fort Scott (1-0 District, 4-1 Southeast Kansas League, 6-1 overall) held the ball for 13 plays before capping the game's opening possession with quarterback Kaleb DeLaTorre's keeper from 5 yards out with 6:09 left in the period.

Chanute held the ball for 16 plays on its first possession and got down to the Tigers' 7-yard line before quarterback Kenton Richards was intercepted by Marcus Stepps in the end zone on fourth-and-6.

Fort Scott needed just four plays to score again. Young's first score of the night, a 1-yard plunge with 11:42 on the clock, was set up by DeLaTorre's 57-yard completion to Wyatt Tourtillott the play before.

Richards kept the ball on the first play of the ensuing possession and scored on an 80-yard run just 22 seconds later. His extra point brought the Comets (0-1, 1-4, 1-6) within 14-7.

Fort Scott answered right back as Carter scored from 10 yards out with 8:21 to go. Tourtillott hauled in a 33-yard scoring pass from DeLaTorre with 6:10 to go, although the extra point was unsuccessful.

Brody Southwell's 34-yard field goal with 3:11 left increased Fort Scott's lead to 30-7. Tourtillott, who accounted for 181 yards of total offense, scored on an 8-yard run with 1:25 left.

Brycen Ellis returned an interception for a touchdown for Chanute with 24 seconds left in the half.

Young scored a pair of 2-yard touchdowns in the third period, boosting his total to 11 for the season, 8 of those in the last three games. it was 51-13 after three periods.

Kyle Montojo capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run with about four minutes to go.

Tourtillott rushed for 91 yards on 11 carries and caught two passes for 90 yards. DeLaTorre completed 4 of 8 passes for 132 yards. He has thrown for 930 yards on the season.

Chanute finished with 231 yards in total offense but gained just 44 yards in the second half. Richards threw for 43 yards on 6-of-14 passing with 2 interceptions. He also rushed for 113 yards on 15 carries but had just 5 yards on the 10 carries following his touchdown.

The 58 points are the third-most Fort Scott has scored against Chanute and the sixth-most the Tigers have posted in a District game.

The Tigers play at Labette County Friday night.
