2's give the 1's good workout at scrimmage

Possibly the best thing about Fort Scott High School's scrimmage at the practice field Saturday morning wasn't the way the No. 1 offense and defense played but how the No. 2's on both sides were able to give the No. 1's a challenge.

"We tell our young guys, 'If you can compete against our No. 1's, you're probably a pretty talented bunch'," FSHS head coach Bob Campbell said. "We've got 15 seniors, eight juniors and about 17 sophomores. Of those sophomores, several are stepping up and doing very good things. Our juniors are doing a very nice job. There's not a lot of them but they're competing.

"Right now, we're trying to find some depth. We've got a lot of competition at different positions. But I think the more competition you have at a position, the No. 1 can't get complacent and the better it makes you as a team."

It was a typical day at the lawn chair scrimmage, with the freshmen working out for about an hour first. The varsity and junior varsity went at it for a little over an hour and a half. It didn't seem that long as things went without too many hitches, although there was a period when the No. 2's faced each other that got a little sloppy. That straightened out quickly and the scrimmage went without a hitch from that point on.

"Our older kids, varsity kids, did a lot of good things," Campbell said. "I thought we executed pretty well for only a week into practice. What I really liked early on was that the kids we have on defense, who are some younger kids, were very competitive. I thought the competition level between our No. 1 offense and the younger defense was very good, which makes us better on both sides."

The Tigers plan to practice once a day for the remainder of the pre-season, 4 p.m. each day. The Red & White Scrimmage is set for Friday with the freshmen at 6 p.m. and the varsity/JV to follow. After one more week of once-a-day practices after school, the Tigers will open the season at Parsons on Sept. 4.

NOTES -- It looks as though the Red & White Scrimmage will be held at Frary Field, barring a major unexpected setback. Workers had started the process of sewing the numbers into the artificial turf Saturday morning after spending most of last week laying out the field, stitching the lettering in the end zones on Friday....

Admission to the scrimmage -- as well as the soccer scrimmage at Ellis Park on Thursday and the volleyball scrimmage at the FSHS gymnasium Friday at 4 p.m. -- is one bottle of sports drink or water. Financial donations will also be accepted....

A USD 234 ground-breaking ceremony will be held Friday night at 5:30 p.m. prior to the football scrimmage....
