Evert Eugene "Gene" Bruner

Evert Eugene "Gene" Bruner, age 74, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. He was born April 13, 1941, in Uniontown, Kan., the son of Homer and Dortha Hartman Bruner. He graduated from Uniontown High School in 1958. He married Donna Lynn Brown on Dec. 20, 1963, in Fort Scott. Gene worked for Ray Shepherd Motors and ran the Texaco and Sinclair station in Fort Scott before becoming a firefighter with the City of Fort Scott from 1968 until 1973. He then worked fulltime for the Kansas National Guard, retiring as a staff sergeant after 38 years of service. After retirement, Gene did custodial work for Fort Scott Community College, Mercy Family Physicians, Ward-Kraft, and was currently employed by USD 234. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons as well as taking care of his lawn and birds. He loved spending time with his family, supporting his grandkids' activities and visiting with his morning coffee crew. He was a devoted husband, brother, dad, grandpa "Papa," and uncle. He loved watching Fort Scott Tigers, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas City Chiefs games. Gene had a big heart and would always help anyone in need.
