Herbert Eugene "Gene" DuVall

Herbert Eugene "Gene" DuVall, age 89, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the Fort Scott Medicalodges. He was born Jan. 15, 1926, in Iola, Kan., the son of Jack DuVall and Sophie Dully DuVall. Gene graduated from High School in Wichita, Kan., and then enlisted with the United States Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Gene later graduated from the Fort Scott Junior College in 1948. He married Bettie L. Crays on Sept. 4, 1949, at Fort Scott. That same year, Gene began a career with the Western Insurance Company. He served in a variety of positions with the Western and retired as Corporate Secretary in May of 1990 following 41 years of service. Gene was instrumental in restoring Fort Scott's old Blockhouse now located on Skubitz Plaza, which was a symbol of the Western. He also helped restore the Fort Lincoln School and relocate the building to its present location on the grounds of Fort Scott Community College. Gene had also served his community in many capacities. He served as president of the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce, served on the board of directors of the Kansas Association of Commerce and Industry, the Highway 69 Association, Rural Water District No. 2 and the Missouri/Arkansas River Basin Association. He had also been involved with the Campfire Girls, Fort Scott Community College Quarterback Club, and the American Red Cross. He had served as commander of the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday school secretary and had also served on the building committee, which helped with the church remodeling and elevator installation. In 1990, Gene was honored as Fort Scott Community College's outstanding alumnus.
