'Hound softball wins finale; Districts next

Fort Scott Community College's softball team concluded the regular season Tuesday with an 11-5 win over the Bacone College junior varsity at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex. Games versus the Central Methodist University junior varsity scheduled at home Friday and on the road Sunday were cancelled.

The Greyhounds finished the regular season with a 22-26 record, which is already the third-highest single-season win total on the program's history. It's just the fourth time Fort Scott softball has recorded a 20-win season.

Bacone scored the first 3 runs, all in the first inning. Fort Scott tied the score in the bottom of the third then took the lead with 2 more in the bottom of the fourth.

K.C. Beardsley and Kristen Tyler had 3 hits each for the Greyhounds. Kalee Ewbank, Alex Perez and Kylie Wilson each had 2 hits.

Christa Merriman (9-11) pitched all 7 innings and allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits and 4 walks.

The Greyhounds will travel to Hutchinson for a first-round best-of-three series in the District D Tournament. The first two games are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday. The third game, if it's needed, will be played at 2 p.m. Sunday. Earlier this season, the Blue Dragons (26-15) swept the Greyhounds in a pair of close decisions, 5-3 and 3-2, in a conference doubleheader at Hutchinson.

The series winner joins the other two first-round winners and the winner of the Region 2 championship series between North Arkansas and Murray State (Okla.) for double-elimination play May 2 and 3 at Topeka's Hummer Sports Park.
