Seconds for throwers at Pitt State

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High's boys picked up a pair of seconds in throwing events while girls' distance-running events featured some of the best times in Kansas this season at the Pittsburg State University Gorilla Relays here Friday.

Nick Woods finished in second place in discus with a distance of 146 feet, 11 inches on his fifth throw in the event. Dylan Untereker of Pittsburg went 148' 7" on his first throw and made it hold up.

Josh Hudiburg had a mark of 180' 7" in javelin, accomplished on his second throw. Brett Thompson of Erie broke the meet record on his sixth throw, going 202' 5".

Fort Scott runners competed in the 800 meters, the 1,600 and the 3,200. Cassidy Westhoff took fourth place in the latter two events.

Girard's Callie Logue set a new meet record in winning the 1,600 in 4:59.09. It's also the fastest time in the state this year. Kaylee Bogina of Northeast, daughter of FSHS girls' head coach Tracey Bogina, was third in 5:11.50, the second-fastest time in Kansas this season. Westhoff finished in 5:14.98, the fifth-fastest time in the state this year.

Melissa Menghin of Fenton (Mo.) Rockwood Summit was the winner in the 3,200 in 11:08.28. Bogina took second in 11:41.22, Jenny O'Bryan of St. Paul third in 11:27.82 and Westhoff fourth in 11:33.51. The times of the Kansas runners were the fastest, third-fastest and sixth-fastest in Kansas this season, respectively.

Grace Willis finished in 16th place in the 800 meters in 2:36.99 but that was fourth-best of the entrants from Kansas. The winner was Alyssa Solberg of Tulsa Lincoln Christian in 2:20.16.

The Tigers will compete at the Independence Relays Friday.
