Eagle softball looks to fill 7 graduates' spots

Saturday, March 28, 2015

A freshman-dominated team will take the field for Uniontown High School softball this team. Six of the 15 team members are first-year players. The Eagles have three seniors, three juniors, and three sophomores.

Head coach Paula Coyan returns for her third year as head coach and her eighth year in the sport. With William Hathaway as assistant coach, Coyan and the Eagles will look to match or better last year's overall record of 13-9.

"We have some big shoes to fill this season after seven starting seniors left us," Coyan said. "So, this is going to be like a whole new team this year.

"We are trying to figure out who is best for what position and what is best for the team."

Of the seniors, only one, Tyeesha Perry, saw playing time last year, coming at third base. The other seniors are Samantha Young, a transfer from North Carolina, who will be on the infield, and Caysha Adams, who is new to the team this year.

Returning juniors are Kyley Brown, who was a starting pitcher, Taylor Cooper, a returning starter at catcher, and outfielder Kate Del Caudra.

Sophomores returning are Holly Shinn, a starter last season, Daryan Herring and Katie Coll. The six freshmen are Breanna Hampton, Laryn Thompson, Madison Wilkinson, Mackenzie Woods, Jacey Bowen, and Keely Goodridge.

"I have a good group of girls, who have been working hard in practice every day and are very dedicated to softball," Coyan says. "I am looking forward to seeing what this season brings -- hopefully, lots of improvement along the way and of course, a winning record."

The season begins Tuesday with a road doubleheader at Yates Center. "We see Yates Center, Humboldt and Jayhawk-Linn as some of our toughest competition, although we do not take any team lightly," Coyan noted. "We are hoping to improve from last year by winning more league games and getting past Regionals.
