Cowley takes Sunday twinbill
Fort Scott Community College's baseball team dropped a pair in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play at Lions Field Sunday, losing to Cowley 6-2 in the first game and 4-1 in the second.
With Cowley's sweep on Thursday, the Tigers (6-0 East, 14-0 overall) won the season series 4-0.
The Greyhounds (1-7, 4-10), now in last place in the East by a game to Independence, scored the first two runs of the opener. Kaden Schaffer scored in the first inning on a ground out. Trey Hair walked in the third, stole second, then stole third and scored on a bad throw by Cowley's catcher.
The Tigers scored 3 in the top of the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.
Shaffer had 2 of Fort Scott's 5 hits. Garrett Benge was 3 for 3 for Cowley, hitting a 2-run homer in the fifth.
Nate Westfahl (1-2) took the loss for Fort Scott, allowing one earned run in 3 2/3 innings on 4 hits and 2 walks with one strikeout.
Fort Scott's only run in the nightcap scored in the bottom of the ninth on Josh Whisler's 2-out solo homer, which was his first of the season. He had 2 of the Greyhounds' 5 hits.
Matt Hicks (1-1) pitched the first six-plus innings for the 'Hounds, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out two.
The Greyhounds host Longview in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. today. Then they will take on Coffeyville in four division games later in the week. There will be a home twinbill at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lions Field and a road doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Coffeyville's Walter Johnson Park.
