FRONTENAC -- Fort Scott High's boys rallied from yet another early deficit Thursday night as the Cardiac Tigers defeated fourth- seeded Winfield, 71-50, in the first round of the Frontenac Kansas Army National Guard Tournament here Thursday night.

Fort Scott's girls fell to top-seeded Oklahoma City-Classen in the nightcap, 77-42, as sophomore Taylor Roberts scored 51 points.

Tiger boys (6-3) trailed 14-2 after just over four minutes of play as Winfield's Will Adler started out strong, scoring 11 points himself in the quarter. The Vikings (6-3) led 21-11 at the end of the period.

But the Tigers outscored Winfield 16-2 in the second quarter, holding Adler without a point. Alex Fink started a 14-0 half-ending run with a stickback of a teammate's miss. Chase Brown hit two 3-pointers during the run.

Fort Scott led 27-23 at the half. Adler scored the first basket of the half for Winfield but the Tigers rolled off another 10 unanswered points, going up 37-25, kicking it off with back-to-back Kaleb DeLaTorre triples.

The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way but the Tigers maintained a 9-point lead, 46-37, going into the final stanza.

The Vikings never got closer than 8 points in the fourth. Brown started a 9-3 run with a basket with a little over four minutes to go that made it 60-45.

Fink led the Tigers with 22 points. Brown finished with three tripled as he came in with 17 points. DeLaTorre added 10 points.

Adler finished with 26 points. Only four other of his teammates scored, none more than 8 points.

The Tigers will face Nevada tonight at 5:30 in Frontenac's new gym in the championship semifinals. Eighth-seeded Nevada (4-8) knocked off the top seed, Prairie View, 53-42.

Classen girls 77, Fort Scott 42.

The Tigers (1-8) played tough for most of the first half, trailing just 34-29 with about two minutes left in the first half. But Roberts and teammate Maite Bradford, who combined for 41 of the Comets' 42 first-half points, were too much to overcome.

Roberts had 30 points in the first half and 44 at the end of three. Bradford finished with 15 points for the Comets (15-2).

Elisha Hasenplaugh led the Tigers, who face Prairie View today at 4 p.m. in the old gym, with 11 points and Madison Cook added 9.
