Mary Katherine (Land) Turley

Mary Katherine (Land) Turley, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 3, 2015, at Medicalodge in Fort Scott, Kan. Mary K was born at home in Fort Scott, Kan., May 23, 1921. Her parents were Basil I. Land and Cora Elizabeth (Masterson) Land, and she was the eldest of four children. She married Wayne Holsti, to which union was born Sonja K. Holsti-Wells, and Jean Ann Allen. Years following that divorce, she married Herbert Turley and they resided in the state of California and Garland, Kan., until his death in 1989.

Mary K was well known in Fort Scott, Kan., as an employee of Whiteside's IGA for over 25 years. She always had a kind word and beautiful smile for her customers. She was a member of Community Christian Church, a 24-year member of the Olive Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, having held offices in that chapter. She resided at Cavalry Crossing for over 21 years, having the distinction of being the third tenant to occupy the beautiful new facility. She was involved in many of the activities offered there. Her hobbies were reading, crocheting, cross-stitching and watching her "stories."

Survivors include children, Sonja Kay (Holsti) and (spouse), Timothy Wells, of Nevada, Mo., and Jean Ann (Holsti) and (spouse) Michael Allen, Deerfield, Mo., grandchildren Heather Elizabeth (Walker) and Brent Shepherd, Diamond, Mo., Sarah Jennifer (Walker) and (spouse) Michael Kelso, Palm Harbor, Fla., Ross and (spouse) Amanda Wells, Columbia, Mo., Matthew and (spouse) Katie Wells, Fort Scott, Kan., Danielle (Wells) Duncan, Centerton, Ark., Rachel (Wells) and (spouse) Victor Rodriguez, Savannah, Ga., Daniel and (spouse) Sandi Allen, Fort Scott, Kan., Matt and (spouse) Meaghan, Lawrence, Kan., great-grandchildren Blake Walker Shepherd, Briauna Elizabeth Shepherd, Lillian Duncan, Drake Duncan, Regen Wells, Zander Wells, Trevor Wells, Mackynzi Wells, Piper Wells, Ashley Allen, Nick Allen, Tyler Allen, Meaa Allen, Madyson Allen, and Kyler Kelso. Also surviving are nieces Sandy (Land) Newell, of Kansas City, Mo., Vicki (Land) and (spouse) Richard Thomas of Smithville, Mo., and Debbie (Land) and (Spouse) John Shook, Houston, Mo., and nephew Wayne Land, Houston, Mo. Mary K also enjoyed the relationships of many dear friends and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers, Basil (Sonny) Land, Donald Lee Land, and Thomas Edwin Land; and great-grandson Rhett Kelso, who passed away in infancy.

Following cremation, A Celebration of Life will be held for Mary K at Cavalry Crossing, 201 West 23rd, Fort Scott, Kan., on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Please join us for a light lunch at 1 p.m. The eulogy will be delivered by son-in-law, Timothy Wells, at 2 p.m. Mary K loved to laugh and would hope those attending would have a lovely time of reminiscing in her memory. Mary K expressed a desire for contributions in her memory be made to The Sharing Bucket, to which she contributed and from which she benefitted, Mercy Hospice, Olive Chapter No. 13, Community Christian Church, or the Cavalry Crossing Activity Fund.
