CHANUTE -- A pair of long scoring runs spelled trouble for Fort Scott High's girls here Friday night as host Chanute pulled away for a 66-35 win in Southeast Kansas League play.

The Blue Comets (1-0 SEK, 4-1 overall), who have no seniors on the roster, scored the last 14 points of the first quarter to take an 18-4 lead.

Ashley Cook scored 7 of Fort Scott's first 10 points to start the second period, bringing the Tigers (0-2, 0-5) within 22-13 with around five minutes remaining. But then Chanute scored the next 15 points to boost the margin to 14.

Madison Cook and Ashley Cook each scored a basket for the Tigers at the end of the half to cut the deficit to 37-17.

Chanute came out of the locker room and put together more runs. The Comets scored 8 of the first 10 points, with 6 of them coming at the free-throw line.

The lead grew to 30 points twice in the third period, the second time at 53-23 after Anna Bagshaw hit a 3-point shot. But the Tigers were able to score 8 of the last 10 to keep the "turboclock" from coming into play at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Ashley Cook finished with 14 points to lead Fort Scott. Bagshaw finished with 18 for Chanute followed by Paige Kidwell with 12, and Sierra Thompson and Madi Rollins each with 10.

The Tigers are off until January 9, when they will travel to Altamont to face Labette County, which was ranked No. 8 in Class 4A-Division I by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association in the final poll going into the holiday break.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Friday's score was not available to the Tribune. However, the Tribune inadvertently omitted the last two games of the home junior varsity tournament, which was held last Saturday.

The Tigers won the first game Saturday over Iola, 29-21, as Jenny Denton scored 8 points and Kelsey Carpenter added 6.

Colgan was the winner of Saturday's second game, 31-30, forcing the Tigers to settle for second place. Denton and Carpenter scored 8 points each.
