UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown High School's girls' basketball team played their rivals close Friday night, even outscoring them in the fourth quarter. But the rally fell just short as visiting Marmaton Valley took a 30-27 victory in a non-league game.

"I was pleased with our effort that we put forth Friday night," Eagle head coach Dustin Miller said. "We definitely need more court time to help us develop our team. Shalina Harper did a tremendous job leading the team while Megan Smith and Bre Hampton also stepped up and made some good plays. I told the girls we have a choice to make we can get better or get bitter. I am glad to say this group wants to get better."

Marmaton Valley opened up the game in the third quarter to take a 24-18 lead. The Eagles outscored the Wildcats, 9-6, in the fourth.

Harper, a sophomore, scored 15 points to lead the Eagles. She and Megan Smith each hauled down 7 rebounds.

Uniontown played a first-round game in the Humboldt Round-Robin Tournament Tuesday night and will return there Thursday and Friday. Eagle boys will also play those on the same nights.
