The new city treasurer for Uniontown won't be quitting her day job.

"I will keep my current job. I am very lucky to have a boss that is very flexible with my hours and letting me have time off when needed," said Chris Middleton, 43, who started training this week for the new position as the city treasurer in Uniontown.

Middleton has been the office manager for Liberty Labels in Fort Scott since July 2007.

Middleton will replace Larry Neville, who has submitted his resignation effective Aug. 1.

In addition to her day job, this week Middleton is beginning the process of learning the accounting software system and the different accounts used for transfers for her new position with the city of Uniontown.

"I will also be learning and helping to write the city budget," she said. "It will be August when I am sworn in."

Middleton has more than 20 years experience with accounting practices and procedures and working with the public, she said.

The current city treasurer, Larry Neville, will be training Middleton until he leaves in August.

Middleton plans on long-term employment with her current employer, and also looks forward to the extra job.

"I love my job at Liberty and plan on retiring from the company one day," Middleton said. "I work with a great group of people who I consider good friends and look forward to working with a great group of people in Uniontown. There is huge feeling of pride when telling my family and friends of my new position with Uniontown."

Middleton grew up in Tucson, Ariz., moving to Kansas in 1992.

She has been married to Steve Middleton since 2004, and they have a combined family of five children. Three are Chris', Jacob, 22; Karley, 20; Blake, 14, and Steve's two daughters, Ashley, 24 and Kelsey, 20; and one grandson, Chandler, 2.

"And three dogs we call our babies," she said.

With a full time job already, Middleton said she looked at the clerk's job as a different type of opportunity.

"My husband and I just purchased a home inside of Uniontown and I thought this was a great way to get involved and become part of the community," she said. "I have always loved anything to do with accounting and thought this would be such a great opportunity for me. I actually thought it was a volunteer position when I applied."

Middleton enjoys living in a small town.

"I am proud to call Uniontown my home," she said. "I have a great group of friends here and a wonderful school system for my son to attend. We joke because my family loves to come back and visit here instead of us going back to see them in Arizona. It's the small hometown feeling they get when visiting and the friendliness of the people. There are so many reasons why I have great pride being a resident of Uniontown and now the city treasurer."

Although she lives in Uniontown, she has commuted to Fort Scott for years. Middleton was employed with Ward Kraft for almost 13 years and has been at Liberty Labels for seven years.

"I look forward to working with Larry Neville and the rest of the city council learning this new position," Middleton said.
