Jack Martin Stephan, age 83, resident of rural Fort Scott, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014, at his home. He was born July 29, 1930, at the family home in Vernon County, Mo., the son of Charles Edward and Alice Bessie Campbell Stephan. He attended elementary grades in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1947, where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He then attended Fort Scott Community College for two years, participating in football and track. Following college in 1951, he enlisted in the Navy, serving four years, all in California. He met Marjorie Struve in San Jose, Calif. They were married on Aug. 21, 1955, in Peetz, Colo. They returned to Kansas and made their home in the rural Redfield and Fort Scott area. Jack was a stockman and farmer, operating a dairy for 37 years. He was a member of the Redfield Grade School Board of Education and taught Sunday school at Redfield United Methodist Church. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Scott where he taught mid-week bible study. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching his sons' and grandchildren's sports activities. In later years, he enjoyed tending their garden.
