'Hounds fall to Crowder in regular-season finale

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team fell to No. 17-ranked Crowder College in its regular-season finale at Neosho, Mo., Wednesday afternoon, 4-1. On Monday, the Greyhounds swept a make-up doubleheader at Wentworth Military (Mo.) by scores of 10-0 and 7-2.

The 'Hounds finished regular-season play with a record of 31-25. They've won 17 of their last 21 games going into this weekend's Region VI Super-Regional playoff series against Butler. The Grizzlies (34-21) last played Saturday when they swept Seward County in a Jayhawk Conference-Western Division doubleheader.

The Super-Regional is a best-of-three series with the first two games played Saturday. The third game, if it's needed will be played on Sunday. All three games will be played at El Dorado's McDonald Stadium. Play begins each day at 1 p.m. The winner goes on to double-elimination play at Wichita May 9-13. The Region VI champion goes on to the NJCAA Junior College World Series at Grand Junction, Colo., May 24-31.

Monday: Fort Scott 10-7, Wentworth Military 0-2.

Fort Scott pitchers Bobby Pierce (2-2) and Brendan James combined to hold Wentworth to 2 hits in the opener. Pirece allowed one hit and 2 walks while striking out 6 in the first 5 innings.

Kolby Greenslade was 3 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI. Dalton Rook and Kaden Shaffer each had 2 hits. Shaffer was credited with 4 RBI, 3 of which came in on his second-inning triple which made it 3-0.

Shaffer also had 3 hits in the second game while Greenslade, Jake Harvey, Austin Oakes, Zach Taylor and Mike Sielinski each had 2 hits.

Ethan Peacock (2-0) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walking no one and striking out 4 in the first 5 innings. Nate Westfahl and Danny Garrett each pitched one inning of hitless relief with Garrett striking out 3 batters.

Crowder 4, Fort Scott 1.

Fort Scott's only run scored in the top of the seventh inning when Josh Griffith drove in Jake Harvey, who had 2 hits for the 'Hounds. He led off the seventh with a single.

Fort Scott used 8 pitchers in the game, one in each inning. Lance Barkley (0-1) was saddled with the loss as Crowder scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie.
