Tuesday, April 1, 2014

Fort Scott Community College's softball team absorbed four losses in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play over the weekend. In a pair of doubleheaders played at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex, the Greyhounds were swept by No. 6 Cowley Saturday, 4-0 and 16-6, and Coffeyville Sunday, 14-6, 9-6.

In Saturday's opener, Cowley pitcher Jessica Seay held the Greyhounds to 4 hits and didn't walk anyone while striking out 11. Bailey Seeetin had 2 of Fort Scott's hits.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth, when the Tigers (8-4 East, 20-6 overall) scored twice.

Cowley led the second game 11-0 before Fort Scott got on the board with 3 runs in the bottom of the third. The 'Hounds also scored 3 in the bottom of the fifth but that wasn't enough to keep the run rule from kicking in.

Lizzie Aller had 2 hits for Fort Scott while Seetin also had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs. Payton Hays also had 2 RBI.

Morgan Swisher went 4 for 4 and scored 3 runs for Cowley.

Fort Scott took a 2-0 lead after one inning of Sunday's opener. But Coffeyville scored 6 in the top of the third to take the lead.

The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of the third but the Red Ravens scored in every inning from that point on.

Kalee Ewbank went 3 for 4 for Fort Scott with 2 RBI. One of her hits was a double and another was a triple. Christa Merriman and Leah Zimmerman each had 2 hits. Merriman also drove in 2 runs.

ShyAnne Wells allowed 4 earned runs on 10 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 for Coffeyville (8-7, 16-19).

The Ravens held a 4-0 lead after two innings of the second game but the Greyhounds (2-14, 5-27) scored 3 in the bottom of the fourth. Each team scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, which kept the Ravens ahead 6-5. Coffeyville added 3 in the top of the sixth and Fort Scott could only answer with one in the bottom of the inning.

Aller, Zimmerman and Merriman each went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Greyhounds. Samantha Bennett drove in 2 runs.
