Darlene Marie Grant

Darlene Marie Grant, age 88, a former resident of rural Mapleton, Kan., and more recently of Chanute, Kan., died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at her home in Chanute. She was born May 9, 1925, in Mapleton, Kan., the daughter of Thomas E. Ball and Dollie Jane Gunsolley Ball. Darlene graduated from the Fulton High School in 1942. She married Charles Grant, Jr. on Oct. 14, 1942, in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 2011. In addition to being a homemaker, Darlene worked in the dietary department of Mercy Hospital for 18 years. She was a member of the Mapleton United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent. She was also past president of the United Methodist Women. Darlene enjoyed crocheting, reading, and doing puzzles as well as baking, painting and traveling.

Survivors include a son, Phillip Grant and wife, Connie, Belle Plain, Kan.; two daughters, Charlene Riley and husband, Lonnie, Chanute, Kan., and Mary Viel and husband, Brian, Hutchinson, Kan.; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Vera Christian, Wichita, Kan., and Reba Lentz, Aurora, Mo. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Kenneth Grant and Gary Dale Grant; two brothers, Gail and Virgil Ball and a sister, Doris West.

Rev. Ron Brown and Rev. Glen Deuderstadt will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 31 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Dayton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
