Portteus S. (Corporon) Hughes, 88, of McPherson, Kan., passed away at 7:55 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, while in the company of family members, at McPherson Hospital.

Portie was born in Arcadia, Kan., on June 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Portteus V. (Stephens) and George William Corporon.

Portie attended and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1943. She attended and graduated from Mt. Carmel Hospital Nursing School, Pittsburg, Kan., in 1946.

Portie was a member of the First Christian Church McPherson, Kan. She was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship, church choir, the Homebuilders Sunday School Class and Disciple Women.

Portie served in the Cadet Nurse Corps.

Portie was a registered nurse for Dr. V.C. Price of McPherson, Kan., for 17 years. She also was a nurse at the Cedars Nursing Home, McPherson, Kan., for seven years.

Portie was a member of the Progressive Homemaker EHU, the Hospital Auxiliary and the sewing club.

Portteus S. Corporon was united in marriage to Claude Lee Hughes on Feb. 28, 1948 at Arcadia, Kan.

She is survived by: daughters Belinda Lee (Charles Brian) Amerman of Runaway Bay, Texas, Mary Lisa Blodgett of Springfield, Mo., and Kirby Ann (John) Gould of Olathe, Kan.; sons; Stephen Claude (Sandy) Hughes, of Weatherford, Texas and Timothy Price Hughes of Topeka, Kan.; sister Mary Virginia Shead, of Arcadia, Kan.; brothers Nelson Osborne Corporon of Lexington, Mo., Charles Edward Corporon of Pittsburg, Kan., and John Robert (Harriett) Corporon of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews

Portie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, George William Corporon, Jr., Lewis Cass Corporon; sister, Margaret Wickstrom; and husband Claude Hughes.

Memorial Service will be held at the First Christian Church, McPherson, Kan., at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 with Pastor Lynn Scott, Reverend Chris Whitacre and Mr. Don Brewer officiating. Visitors may greet the family following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Private family inurnment of cremains will precede the service at the McPherson Cemetery McPherson, Kan.
