Eagle girls win game, lose tie-breaker

PLEASANTON -- Uniontown's girls won their final game of the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament here Friday night. But a 44-43 win over Jayhawk-Linn wasn't enough to keep the Eagles (5-7) from finishing in last place in the "Championship Pool."

Following a 42-38 loss to Jayhawk-Linn Thursday and Pleasanton's 41-35 loss to their rival Jayhawks on Friday, there was a three-way tie between the Eagles, Blu-Jays and Central Heights at 1-2.

Jayhawk-Linn was the tournament champion with a 3-0 record. Uniontown was eliminated on the first tie-breaker which was point differential. Uniontown scored 11 points less than they allowed in the tournament while Pleasanton and Central Heights were each outscored by just 2 points.

Pleasanton won the tie-breaker with Central Heights for second place on total points allowed, 127 to 134.

An Eagle rally fell short on Thursday night as they outscored the Jayhawks 16-12 in the fourth quarter.

DaNisha Robinson scored 13 points and hauled down 7 rebounds for Uniontown. Lakyn Coyan added 10 points. Mandie Ridge handed out 5 assists. Britney Stokes and Hannah Travis each had 6 rebounds.

Friday night's game was tied 15-15 after one period. Uniontown took a 25-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

Central Heights led 37-32 after three. But the Eagles won the fourth quarter 12-6 to take the game.

Robinson had a double-double for Uniontown as she scored 17 points and brought down 13 rebounds. Jessica Farra broke out of a scoring slump with 12 points. She and Ridge each handed out 5 assists.

Central Heights boys 57, Uniontown 30.

Uniontown (5-7) trailed just 14-10 after one quarter but couldn't find more than 7 points in any of the other three periods.

"Scoring points was a problem again tonight," Eagle head coach Jeremy Neville said. "We played well at times in the first half but turnovers and miss missed scoring opportunities took a toll on us."

The Eagles made just 11 of 22 free throws, prompting Neville to say that this was an area his team must work on.

Skyler Riley led the Eagles in scoring with 7 points.

Despite the loss, Uniontown finished third in the boys' "Championship Pool." No tie-breakers were needed as Humboldt, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, won the pool at 3-0 followed by Central Heights at 2-1, the Eagles 1-2 and Jayhawk-Linn bringing up the rear at 0-3.

With seven teams in the tournament this year, Pleasanton made the decision to split the tournament into "Championship" and "Consolation" pools, putting the top four seeds into the first pool and the bottom three into the other.

Humboldt won the girls' Consolation pool with a 2-0 record followed by Marmaton Valley at 1-1 and Altoona-Midway at 0-2. Marmaton Valley won the boys' consolation pool with a 2-0 record with Pleasanton second and Altoona-Midway in third at 0-2.

Uniontown's teams step back into Three Rivers League play Tuesday night with a doubleheader at Jayhawk-Linn.
