Laurie Renee Stefka
Laurie Renee Stefka, age 53, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at the home of her sister in rural Fort Scott. She was born Sept. 20, 1960, in Hawthorne, Calif., the daughter of Leo McGee and Dorothy Jean Oliver McGee. Laurie graduated from Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Community College. She married Wade Stefka on Jan. 8, 1983, at Fort Scott. Laurie had worked as a certified physical therapist assistant at Mercy Hospital for over 35 years. Laurie had a passion about her career and helping others get back to health. In earlier years, she volunteered as assistant troop leader for her son's Boy Scout troop.
Survivors include her husband, Wade, of the home; her son, Kyle Stefka, Glendive, Mont.; her mother, Dorothy Maycumber, of Fort Scott; four sisters, Suzy Lawson and husband, Barry, of Costa Rica, Jodie Miller and husband, David, Fort Scott; Connie McWilliams and husband, Ric, Lincoln, Neb., and Kelly Allison and husband, Tony, Bartlett, Kan.; a brother, Jamie Maycumber and wife, Kristie, of Fort Scott. Also surviving are her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leonard and Donna Stefka, Pittsburg, Kan.; a brother-in-law, David Stefka, Linn, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her fathers, Leo McGee and Chester Maycumber.
William James Schafer of Mercy Pastoral Care will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the West Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Care to Share and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O.
