Paola knocks Tigers out of playoffs

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

PAOLA -- Paola tailback Jeremy Criddle scored on two long touchdown runs in the first half here Tuesday night and Fort Scott High was not able to recover as the Panthers went on to a 24-7 victory in a Class 4A Bi-District Playoff Game at Panther Field.

Criddle scored on a 74-yard run with 6:02 left in the first quarter and from 44 yards out with 6:30 left in the second. Luke Wilson's 32-yard field goal with 26 seconds to go made it 17-0 at the break.

The Tigers (5-5) tried to respond after Criddle's second score but Mason Knopp's fourth-and-8 pass from the Paola 22 was intercepted by Robinson. Fort Scott was also unable to convert a fourth-and-2 at the Paola 49 in the second quarter. Criddle scored three plays later. Wilson's field goal followed an interception by Andrew Henn -- who is also Paola's quarterback -- with 2:45 left in the half.

Paola (9-1) stopped the Tigers on a fake punt early in the third quarter but turned it right back over on a fumble on the next play. Fort Scott took over on its own 21-yard line and drove 79 yards in 13 plays. Jash Pytlowany hauled in a fourth-and-11 pass from 16 yards out with 5:12 to go in the period. Johnathan Allen's kick brought the Tigers within 17-7.

Paola answered that score with a 40-yard run by Exzavier Miller -- who scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime period Thursday night against Louisburg to give the Panthers the District 5 title -- with 2:38 on the clock.

Fort Scott drove to the Paola 26 on the ensuing drive but the Panthers held the Tigers to no gain on fourth-and-1.

The Tigers got to the Paola 43 on the next drive and to the Panthers' 10 on the drive following that. But both times, the drive stalled on fourth down incomplete passes.

Fort Scott finished the night with more first downs (18 to 5) and yards of total offense (325 to 295). Paola only attempted one pass, that going incomplete.

The Tigers rushed for 228 of their yards on 53 carries. Carter Young led with 63 yards on 18 carries followed by Brendyn Quinney with 52 on 7 rushes, Race Kastl with 47 on 14 run plays, and Knopp with 44 on 6 totes.

Knopp completed 6 of 21 passes for 97 yards and was intercepted twice. Pytlowany caught three for 36 yards.

The Tigers were hit with yet another injury as Alex Fink had to leave the game in the first quarter. Fort Scott suffered through more than a half-dozen injuries this season that kept starters out on either one or both sides of the ball for lengthy periods of time.

Paola will host Independence Saturday, game time to be determined. The Bulldogs (5-5), who now have won four straight games, beat Columbus 33-14 at Independence Tuesday night. Courtlan Hayes scored two touchdowns -- one on offense, the other on an interception return in the fourth quarter -- as Indy outscored the Titans 20-0 in the period.

Columbus' season ended with an 8-2 record. Both losses were to teams from Montgomery County as the Titans lost to Coffeyville in district play.

Speaking of Coffeyville, the Golden Tornado (9-1) overcame a scrappy first-half effort by Frontenac to prevail over the Raiders, 47-12 Tuesday night. Coffeyville has also won four consecutive games.

The Nado will travel to Chanute Saturday night. The Blue Comets trailed 14-0 early in the third quarter but scored four consecutive touchdowns to win 28-14. Sam Son scored 2 touchdowns for the Comets (8-2), including the one that tied the game from 35 yards with 53 seconds left in the third.

Ethan Van Anne's 34-yard TD run put Chanute ahead with 6:04 to go. Son scored from 33 yards out with 3:44 left. The Blue Comets have won five straight since suffering back-to-back losses to Pittsburg and Coffeyville in weeks four and five.
