Lewis Hurl Kalm

Lewis Hurl Kalm, age 101, former resident of rural Fort Scott, Kan., more recently of Presbyterian Village, died Saturday, Nov. 2, at Fort Scott Medicalodge. He was born Oct. 17, 1912, in Crawford County, Kan., the son of Harmon Henry Kalm and Mable Loving Vaughn Kalm. He married Nellie Pence on Jan. 25, 1936, in Girard, Kan. Hurl owned and operated his farming operation until the age of 89. He was a member of the Community Christian Church. His hobbies include working with wood, with which he made furniture and collectables. He loved to fish, hunt squirrels, trap coyotes and ice skate. In his later years he enjoyed bowling on the senior league.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie; two sons, Raymond Kalm and wife Kay, Garland, Kan., and Lewis Kalm and wife Jeanne, Fort Scott; and one daughter, Kathryn Doerfler and husband Dave, Fort Scott. Also surviving is a daughter-in-law, Dixie Kalm of Arcadia; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Keith Edward Kalm, a sister Hazel Endicott, granddaughter, Kayla Kutz and a great-grandson, Logan Clark.

Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday in the Community Christian Church. Burial will follow in Sheffield Cemetery near Arcadia. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Community Christian Church and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O.
