Margaret Arletta Monroe

Margaret Arletta Monroe, age 88, a resident of Fort Scott, died early Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at the Fort Scott Manor in Fort Scott, Kan. She was born Oct. 24, 1925, in Devon, Kan., the daughter of George Lester VanDyke and Elsie Gladys Canaday VanDyke. She married Edward Leroy Monroe in 1942. He passed away in 1984. Margaret enjoyed sewing and had made her living working as a seamstress and a dressmaker. She had also worked a short time for both Key Industries and the Downtowner Motel. In addition to sewing, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member or the Grace Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include her five children; Jewell Bell, Wichita, Kan., Elsie Frank and husband, Roy, Mulvane, Kan., Tim Monroe, Wichita, Kan., Bill Monroe and wife, Mindy, Decatur, Ala., and Arletta Monroe and Jim, of Salina, Kan. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and a brother, Earl VanDyke of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. She was preceded in death by a brother, George VanDyke and two sisters, Cleda Colgan and Martha VanDyke.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Woods Cemetery near Redfield, Kan. The family will receive friends from 11 to 12:45 on Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery.
