'Hounds collapse in fourth quarter

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

COFFEYVILLE -- It looked as though Fort Scott Community College's football team had an excellent chance to win its first game of the season here Saturday. As the third quarter was coming to a close, Fort Scott held a 33-27 lead. Backup running back Kyle Hammond was having an excellent game in place of suspended Jo-Nathan Alford. And the defense, though it had bent a few times, wasn't breaking.

And then things just suddenly fell apart. Two blocked punts, a lost fumble and a turnover on downs led to 28 Coffeyville points in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter, leading the Red Ravens to a 62-39 Jayhawk Conference victory.

Fort Scott remains winless at 0-3 in the conference, 0-4 overall. The Greyhounds are surrendering a conference-worst 52.8 points per game, 0.6 points worse than Independence, which outside of a 24-20 win over Southeast Texas Prep in Week Two, has been outscored 190-3 in its three losses.

Next week, the 'Hounds travel to Dodge City (2-1, 3-1) which will almost certainly gain a top-20 ranking after beating No. 11 Hutchinson 40-34 in overtime Saturday. The Conquistadors were 0-9 last season but have beaten two ranked teams this year.

Fort Scott lost despite 365 yards passing off the arm of Dodge City transfer Jason Stewart, the third most for the 'Hounds since 1996 and the most since Willie Marshall threw for 356 yards in a loss to Highland in 2005. Hammond, who was one of the best eight-man players in the state last season at Crest, rushed for 118 yards and scored three touchdowns. And receiver Chevelle Buie caught 20 passes for 197 yards, the most catches by any 'Hound receiver since 1996. Cedric Houston caught 12 of Marshall's passes in that 2005 loss to Highland.

Coffeyville (1-1, 2-2) came into this game ranked next-to-last in the conference in total offense (219 yards per game), rushing (93.3) and passing (125.7). Red Raven quarterback Dakota Collins had completed just 31 percent of his passes for the season but went 13 of 25 against the 'Hounds for 169 yards and four touchdowns.

Andre Allen, the conference's third-leading rusher, scored first for Coffeyville on a 3-yard run 2:04 into the contest. The Greyhounds blocked the extra point.

Allen was tackled in his own end zone by Luke Elam with 3:50 to go, putting Fort Scott on the board. Following the free kick, the 'Hounds scored on Hammond's 5-yard run off the left side of the line with 1:23 on the clock. Fort Scott led 9-6.

Coffeyville took the lead back at the end of the quarter when Collins found Derek Keaton for a 59-yard scoring pass with no time in the clock. Toshi Hayashi's PAT kick put the Ravens up 13-12.

Fort Scott scored on its next two possessions. Carlos Chavez kicked a 34-yard field goal with 54 seconds into the second to put the Greyhounds up 13-12. Then Jared Dangerfield hauled in a 12-yard scoring pass from Stewart with 10:59 left and Chavez made the PAT.

Hammond made it 26-13 on a 6-yard run with 4:04 to go. Coffeyville came back on the following possession to score with 36 seconds left on a 17-yard pass from Collins to Myles White.

Collins also found Akia Booker from 20 yards out with 6:23 left in the third quarter to put the Ravens up 27-26. But Hammond scored his third touchdown on the ensuing possession, a 2-yard plunge that put Fort Scott ahead 33-27 with 3:45 left in the third.

Late in the third, Coffeyville broke through the line and blocked Matt Vincent's punt for the second time in the half. The Ravens took over at the Fort Scott 36 with 1:08 left in the third. Collins hit Dijuan Ussery from 23 yards out on a fourth-down pass with 13:26 left in the game to put Coffeyville ahead 34-33.

The Ravens recovered Hammond's fumble at the Fort Scott 18 and Allen scored on the next play with 12:29 to go. Then Vincent had a third punt blocked and Coffeyville's Jalen Rountree scooped it up at the Fort Scott 22 and scored with 11:47 on the clock.

An incomplete pass on fourth-and-10 from the Coffeyville 40 gave the ball back to the Ravens, who scored four plays later on Allen's 19-yard run with 8:52 to go.

J.J. Normore caught a 29-yard TD pass form Chanute High graduate Brock Gilmore with 3:56 to go to make it 62-33.

Fort Scott got a consolation touchdown pass from Stewart to Dangerfield with 37 seconds remaining.
