Ruth Louise Read

Ruth Louise Read, age 79, resident of Fort Scott, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at the Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada, Mo. She was born March 28, 1934, in St. Paul, Kan., the daughter of Charles "Bud" Groner and Vera Mudd Groner. She graduated from St. Paul High School. She married Francis "Cisco" Read on July 10, 1955, in St. Paul. He preceded her in death on April 3 of this year. She worked for Key Work Clothes in Fort Scott as a seamstress and retired after 34 years. Ruth enjoyed gardening, especially roses. She sewed many of the girl's dresses when they were young. She was a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Ruth was a dedicated and devoted mother.

Survivors include eight children, John Read and wife Paula, Andover, Kan., Chuck Read, Moundville, Mo., Becky Grounds and husband Gene, Iantha, Mo., Brenda Beerbower and husband Ed, Fort Scott, Julie Smith, Fort Scott, Carol Read, Fort Scott, Joyce Swearingen and husband Matt, Nevada, and Rose Gauthier and husband Dale, Fort Scott; one brother, Warren Groner, Girard, Kan.; and two sisters Virginia Payne, Newton, Kan., and Lou Piotrowski and husband Pete, Fort Scott. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, David Read and wife Jessica, Carrie Lord and husband Heath, Phillip Read and wife Amanda, Stacy Read, LeAnna Pope, Justin Briggs, Kallie Stowe and husband Killian, Gene Grounds, Josh Smith, and Alex Smith; 11 great grandchildren, Krystal, McKenna, Isabel, Isaiah, Bryton, Skyler, Colby, Kaden, Logan, Draven, and Sage; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Groner and a sister, Mary Groner.

Father Robert Wachter will conduct the funeral mass at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. till 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Compassus and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O.
