IOLA -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team improved to 3-1 on the season with sweeps of Iola and Prairie View here Thursday.

The Tigers (3-1) defeated Prairie View, 25-18, 25-22, and Iola, 25-16, 25-18. Brianne Lawrence had 6 kills and Jillian Lattimer recorded 5. Ashley Cook handed out 17 assists and served 4 aces. Katie Gorman was credited with 6 digs.

"We played very composed against Prairie View," Fort Scott head coach Carol Bingesser said. "Our serving was excellent. I started calling serving spots and the girls responded great. We had 8 ace serves and really rattled (Prairie View) with our placement of the serves.

"Our passing was great, Katie Gorman did an excellent job making Ashley Cook's sets wonderful. Our hitters had a field day, getting 19 kills."

In the Iola match, Lawrence had 4 kills with Lattimer and Ericah Shoemaker picking up 3 each. Cook handed out 12 assists and served 4 more aces. Gorman picked up 5 digs.

"Against Iola, the girls came out fired up, played with a lot of enthusiasm," Bingesser said. "Again, our serving was excellent with 7 ace serves. And our passing was on, so the sets were great which allowed the hitters to have some really nice swings.

"Our defense was great against Iola. Katie Gorman got to some balls that normally wouldn't be touched and the girls responded with big kills from those digs. I was really proud of them for how much intensity they played with."

Bingesser reported that the JV also won both matches, beating Prairie View and Iola, and that the freshmen beat Parsons, Columbus and Jayhawk-Linn in a road quadrangular, making Fort Scott's teams a perfect 7-0 on the day.

The Tiger varsity plays today at Columbus with Pittsburg and Girard also participating in a non-league quad. Play begins at 9 a.m.
