Cal Ripken, Babe Ruth tourneys underway

Thursday, July 11, 2013

Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth District baseball tournaments are underway for most teams in Southeast Kansas, with one already concluded and a few scheduled to begin Wednesday night.

Since there are only five districts remaining, there are several tournaments from which two teams will advance to State tournaments. In cases where an SEK team is also hosting state, three teams will advance from District play.

A Cal Ripken 10-and-Under District Tournament was held last week at Coffeyville. The teams were split into two brackets, with the winner of each advancing to State play at Ottawa July 12-15. Fort Scott's 10-year-olds were in Bracket B and were eliminated in two games.

On July 3, Fort Scott lost to Independence 13-9. Hunter Killion was named Fort Scott's Most Valuable Player and Levi Bin was given the WOW Award, which goes to a player from each team who made a play deemed outstanding.

On July 5, Fort Scott was eliminated from the tournament by Columbus, 17-7. Jake Harvey was MVP and Brady Lucas the WOW recipient for Fort Scott.

Independence went on to win Bracket B and earn a State berth. Coffeyville won Bracket A and also advanced so State.

The Cal Ripken 11-Year-Old District Tournament was held at Columbus last week. Fort Scott won the Sportsmanship Award and finished in third place in the tourney.

Fort Scott defeated Tri-Valley, 6-3, in the first round on July 6. Colt Eck was named MVP and Reht Reed won the WOW Award.

Columbus defeated Fort Scott, 3-0, in the winner's bracket semifinal July 6. Jacob DeLaTorre was Fort Scott's MVP and Cody Durossette was the WOW winner.

A combined team from Erie, Humboldt and Chanute defeated Fort Scott 11-2 later in the day on July 6 to eliminate the locals. Eck was again MVP and Cody McNeil won the WOW Award.

Columbus defeated Erie/Humboldt/ Chanute, 8-7, in the finals. Columbus advances to the 11-and-Under State Tournament at Paola as District 5 champion while E-H-C will advance as "Wild Card East."

Fort Scott's 9-year-olds will begin District play at Oswego tonight with a 6 p.m. game against the winner of Wednesday night's game between Erie and Columbus. Parsons and Tri-Valley, representing the Oswego area, played the other first-round game Wednesday night.

This is a five-team tournament which will conclude Saturday. The tournament winner and runner-up (as Wild Card East) represent Southeast Kansas at the Cal Ripken 9-and-Under State Tournament at Garden City July 18-22.

Fort Scott does not have a team in 12-and-Under play this year.

At the Babe Ruth level, Fort Scott's 13-year-olds began District play at Parsons Wednesday night with a game against Columbus. Three of the six teams in the tournament will advance to State as Frontenac will host State. The two best teams other than Frontenac will also advancing. State will be held July 18-23.

Fort Scott's 15-year-old squad began Districts at Oswego Wednesday night. Cherryvale is the host of the State Tournament but has chosen not to play in the District tournament. This leaves eight teams battling for two berths.

Fort Scott will play Tri-Valley (Oswego area) in a first-round game tonight at 6 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday.
