A Redfield teen was killed in a one-vehicle accident Monday night in southwest Bourbon County.

The Bourbon County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday that 16-year-old Aleah Sutterby died in the crash that took place about 8:30 p.m. Monday on Kansas Highway 3 just north of Eagle Road.

Bourbon County Deputy Sheriff Mike Feagins, who worked the crash, said the vehicle, a Dodge Swinger, drove off the east side of the roadway, entered the road again and crossed the road. At this point the driver lost control of the vehicle again and over-corrected, left the road again and struck a creek embankment.

Feagins said Sutterby was ejected from the vehicle. He said it was not apparent that she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Feagins said responding agencies included Bourbon County Fire District No. 3, the BCSO and a Mercy Hospital ambulance. Sutterby was flown from the scene by medical helicopter to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo.

Feagins and Bourbon County Sheriff Ron Gray said Sutterby was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Gray said it is not clear what initially caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and leave the roadway.

"For whatever reason, she went off the road," Gray said. He added that he did not think cell phone use or texting, or the use of drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash.

According to a death notice the Tribune received Tuesday, Sutterby died early Tuesday at Freeman Hospital. Arrangements for Sutterby will be announced later by Cheney Witt Chapel.
