Laura Jean Hyer, age 53, resident of Fort Scott, died Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She was born Oct. 22, 1959 in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Robert Miles and Victoria Spengler Miles. Her father died at an early age and she was reared by her step-father, Roger Walters. Laura was a graduate of Olathe High School. She married Carl Hyer in 1983. They later divorced. Laura had worked for various entities in Fort Scott including Emergency Management Coordinator for both Bourbon and Douglas Counties. She worked as an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance and as a reporter for the Bourbon County Review and the Linn County News. She was a volunteer with CASA and loved gardening, cooking, waterskiing and any type of travel. Laura loved to spend time with children and grandchildren.

Survivors include six sons, Adam Brandt and wife Jessica, Pleasanton, Coy Hyer and wife Afton, Royce Hyer and wife Danielle, Amos Hyer and wife Jennifer, David Hyer and Marshall Hyer, all of Fort Scott; two daughters, Carly Hyer and Kamala Hyer both of Fort Scott. Also surviving are four brothers, Robert Miles, North Carolina, Chris Miles, Olathe, Kan., Roger Miles, South Carolina and Brody Walters, Florida; two sisters, Melidy Miles, North Carolina and Cindy Miles, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; her Mother, Vickie Walters, North Carolina; four grand-children, Titus, Eli, Hugh, and Chase; and her fiance, Billy Webster. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Miles and step-father, Roger "Big" Walters.

Tim Schafer will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Friday in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Care To Share and may be sent to Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O.
