Tennis tourney reset for Monday; Tiger baseball, softball make-ups May 3

Fort Scott (near court) and Pittsburg players warmed up on the courts near Fort Scott High School moments before the coaches of the teams that were to play in Tuesday's Fort Scott Invitational agreed that the courts were too wet to play on and wouldn't get better despite waiting an extra hour past the originally-scheduled 3 p.m. start time. The coaches waited as long as they could at the Fort Scott High School tennis courts Tuesday afternoon. But after waiting an extra hour, it was determined that the courts at both the high school and Woodland Hills Golf Courts were not going to dry enough to hold the Fort Scott varsity invitational.

The home tournament was originally scheduled for March 26 but was called off that day. The make-up was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and work had been performed to try to get the courts dry. The high school courts wouldn't dry enough along the south baselines to allow saw play and the courts at Woodland Hills still had standing water on them when the coaches agreed to call things off after waiting 50 minutes.

The tennis team plays at Chanute Friday, then will try to play the home tourney again Monday at 3 p.m. Pittsburg, Nevada and Coffeyville are scheduled to attend.

Fort Scott High School baseball and softball doubleheaders scheduled for Tuesday at Independence were also postponed. The varsity baseball team has had six of its seven scheduled dates this season either postponed or relocated to a different field. The varsity Tigers have not yet had a home game this season as two doubleheaders were moved to the opponent's field and the dates of the single varsity games versus Nevada were swapped.

The baseball team plays a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader at 4:30 Friday at Labette County. Next week, the Tigers will have three home dates. If the weather is good, those will be their only home appearances of the season.

Fort Scott will host Parsons at 4:30 Tuesday at Lions Field, Coffeyville at 4:30 Thursday and take on Nevada in a single game at 4:30 Friday.

The softball team hasn't had as much bad luck as the baseball team but Tuesday's rainout was the second postponement for the Tigers in six days as Thursday's home twinbill with Girard was called off. The Tigers also play at Labette County Friday evening.

Tuesday's doubleheaders with Independence will be made up May 3. The softball doubleheader with Girard has been rescheduled for April 30.
