Weather affecting Tiger baseball the most

Friday, April 12, 2013

Due to wet fields, both Fort Scott High Baseball and Tiger softball had to postpone home doubleheaders scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Fort Scott High golf team also had its tournament at Parsons postponed due to wet conditions at the KATY course there.

The baseball team (3-3) will play today at 4:30 but the doubleheader has been moved to Paola. The Tigers have not yet played at home this season and aren't scheduled to until the week of April 23. That week, they'll play five home games in four days.

Fort Scott was scheduled to open the season at home with a single game against Nevada, but that was postponed and was to have been played Tuesday. But wet grounds forced that game to be moved to Nevada. However, the April 26 rematch with Nevada will be held at Lions Field in Fort Scott, capping the five-game week of home games.

The Tigers were scheduled to play at Girard on March 28 but those games were moved to Neosho County Community College's field in Chanute. The first game, a Fort Scott in, was completed but the second game was suspended due to darkness as Neosho County's field doesn't have lights.

An April 2 doubleheader at Louisburg was switched to Louisburg. The teams split 7-5 decisions that day. And the Tigers played at Pittsburg, splitting a Southeast Kansas league doubleheader there on April 4. Those games were originally scheduled for Pittsburg.

Unless other changes are made, the Tiger baseball team will play only five home games this season: versus Parsons April 23, versus Coffeyville on April 25 and the single game against Nevada on the 26th.

The Tigers' next scheduled outing will be a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Independence.

Thursday's home softball doubleheader against Girard has been rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. April 20 at Don Hewett Field. The softball team has had just one other event postponed this season. The home tournament that was to be held March 26 was played April 5 but one of the four teams originally scheduled to play, Baxter Springs, had to drop out. The Tigers defeated Spring Hill and Pittsburg to win the tournament.

The next scheduled date for the softball team is also an SEK twinbill at Independence at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Thursday was the first time the golf team ran into trouble with the weather. The Parsons Invitational was scheduled to be the first of the four Southeast Kansas League designated tournaments that count toward determining the league's team and individual champions. That has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. April 22 at the KATY Course but it will still be the first league tournament. The second one will be hosted by Labette County High School three days later at the Parsons Country Club.

The Tiger golf squad will host its home varsity invitational at 1 p.m. Monday at Woodland Hills Golf Course.

Fort Scott tennis was not affected as the Tigers were not scheduled to play until today at Parsons. Play begins at 3 p.m. The tennis team also holds its junior varsity invitational Monday at 1 p.m. and the make-up of its varsity tournament Tuesday at 3 p.m.

The Tiger track and field teams are scheduled to participate in the Pittsburg State Relays at 3 p.m. this afternoon.
