Wednesday, January 30, 2013

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's boys held a one-point lead four times in a roughly five-minute stretch of the late third and early fourth quarters here Tuesday night. But the Tigers could never get that next basket to get them on a roll and Pittsburg slowly pulled away for a 58-52 Southeast Kansas League victory.

The Tigers (2-4 SEK, 5-9 overall) and Purple Dragons (2-4, 7-6) find themselves tied for fifth place in the seven-team league.

Pittsburg went out to a 10-2 lead in the game's first 4 1/2 minutes. It was 12-4 when Jash Pytlowany got the Tigers going with a 3-point goal with 1:40 left in the first period. That sparked a 7-0 run with Pytlowany hitting another jumper and Johnathan Stark converting a layup to bring Fort Scott within one point as the buzzer sounded.

Pittsburg used four 3-point goals, two each by Kaleb Owens and Tanner Ellis, to extend its lead to 11 points, 26-17 at the half.

Fort Scott scored 8 of the first 10 of the third with Pytlowany cutting the deficit to 27-25.

Garin Sinn converted Stark's steal into a layup to cap a 6-0 run that saw Fort Scott take its first lead, 33-32, with 2:45 left in the quarter.

Stefon Rich put the Dragons back in front but Mason Knopp answered with his only basket with 1:06 to go to put the Tigers up 35-34.

Ellis made a basket but was unable to convert the free throw he earned with one minute to go. Stark's stickback of a teammate's miss made it 37-36 going into the fourth quarter.

Rich scored to open the fourth for Pittsburg but was also unable to make the free throw to convert the 3-point play. Stark put the Tigers ahead one last time moments later, 39-38.

Spencer Bernhardt put Pittsburg ahead with a 3-point goal and Owens made one of two free throws with 5:40 left. Kaleb DeLaTorre hit a 3-point basket with around five minutes to go to tie the score at 42-42.

Pittsburg scored 8 of the next 10. DeLaTorre hit another triple with 1:42 to go to bring the Tigers within 50-47. The Dragons held Fort Scott without a field goal the rest of the way.
