Eagle girls roll; boys struggle

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

CHETOPA -- Uniontown's girls rolled to a 60-38 victory over Chetopa in Three Rivers League play here Tuesday night as Hayden Rathbun led the way with 25 points.

Uniontown's boys struggled offensively in the second half, scoring just 2 points in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth of a 49-29 loss.

Rathbun also had 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists for Uniontown's girls, who improved to 2-3 in the league and 5-10 overall.

"Tonight we accomplished our three goals: Take care of the ball, play solid defense, and own the boards," Eagle head coach Dustin Miller said. "This was a nice win to help prepare us for our next game."

The next game -- for both the girls and boys -- is Friday night at rival Marmaton Valley.

DaNisha Robinson and Emily Shinn contributed double-doubles for the Eagles. Robinson scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Shinn had 10 of each.

Chetopa fell to 1-3, 4-10.

Uniontown's boys trailed just 11-10 after one quarter and 23-19 at the half. But the Hornets (4-0, 10-4) outscored the Eagles 19-2 in the third.

Skyler Riley scored 10 points for Uniontown (1-4, 5-10). Brenton Esslinger was held to 7 points.

Chetopa remains one of four teams with unbeaten league records. Crest has a game in hand at 5-0 while the Hornets, St. Paul and Oswego are all 4-0 in league play (Oswego's status depends on the outcome of Tuesday's game against Northeast, which was not available at press time).
