PAOLA -- Fort Scott High School's wrestling finished in fourth place at the Paola Invitational here Saturday.
Class 6A Derby was the team champion with 216.5 points followed by 5A Great Bend with 197.5 and 6A Olathe North with 120. Fort Scott scored 111 points and the next-best Class 4A school was Atchison, which finished sixth.
Two Tigers won their weight classes. Victor Hughes, at 138 pounds, and Jake Durossette, at 145, each went 4-0 on the day. Cole Stewart (106), Jerad Heckman (126), and B.J. Wilson (220) each finished fourth, while John Hughes (160) and Brendan Blackburn (285) were fifth and Marques Floyd (182) placed seventh.
V.Hughes was the top seed in the bracket at 138 and began the day with pins over Wiley Johns of Pittsburg and Racindo Espinosa of Derby in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he took a 9-1 decision over Kossivi Esse of Kansas City-Sumner. He defeated Kade Sander of Great Bend in the finals, 8-1. Sander came into the match with just two losses this season. Hughes is now 31-5.
Durossette drew a first-round bye at 145. He pinned Josh Brown of Olathe North in the quarterfinals and Zack Schridde of Great Bend in the semis. In the finals, he scored a technical fall over Paola's Daniel Dees.
Stewart drew a first-round bye at 106 but was pinned by Ryan DesLauries of Great Bend in the quarterfinals. In consolation, Stewart pinned Ty Hollinger of Paola and dropped a 2-1 decision to Emmanuel Browne of Sumner in the third-place match.
Heckman had a bye at 126 before taking a 10-3 decision over Jeff Wallingford of Atchison in the quarterfinals. Chris Burley of Great Bend took
a 5-2 decision in the semifinal. Burley went on to win the bracket and has lost just once this season.
In consolation, Heckman claimed a 1-0 decision over Sam Seaton of Basehor-Linwood and lost a 2-0 decision to Willey Dikeman of Atchison County in the third-place match.
Wilson drew a first-round bye at 220 then pinned Harley Burch, who was wrestling unattached. Gunar Brewer of Great Bend sent Wilson to consolation with a pin in the semifinal.
Wilson pinned Brett Cockerham of Olathe North in the consolation semifinal. Matt Kissinger of Derby took the third-place match by pinfall.
John Hughes pinned Olathe North's Tyler Moulden in the first around at 160. He claimed a 5-3 decision over Great Bend's Bryce Hoffmeister in the quarterfials. Taylor Schuetz of Atchison County claimed a major decision over Hughes in the semifinal, 18-6.
Pittsburg's Jacob Wools took a 16-12 decision in the consolation semifinal. Hughes came back to take a 4-0 verdict over Hoffmeister in the fifth-place bout.
Blackburn had a first-round bye at 285 and then took a 3-0 decision over Jared Hoffman of Atchison County. He was pinned by Paola's Joe Pomatto in the semifinals.
Seagar Smith of Basehor-Linwood won the consolation semifinal, 1-0. But Blackburn finished the day by pinning Hoffman in the fifth-place match.
Floyd was pinned by Bishop Miege's Sean Maxwell in the opening round at 182. He then went into the back half of the bracket and drew a bye, then pinned Michael Longacre, who was unattached. Floyd won the seventh-place match due to injury default by Skylar Manley of Eudora.
The Tigers will be in action at a Southeast Kansas League triangular Thursday night at Independence, which will also include Labette County. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the internet by KOMB/KMDO via its Fort Scott TV service.
