Tiger girls roll behind 31-3 2nd-half output

FRONTENAC -- Fort Scott High's girls allowed the fewest points in a game since the 2006-07 season here Thursday night as they routed Hogan Prep of Kansas City, Mo., 52-16, in the first round of the round-robin Frontenac Kansas National Guard Invitational.

The Tigers (5-4) outscored the Rams 25-1 in the third quarter and 31-3 in the second half. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

Fort Scott will play Frontenac at 5 p.m. tonight in Frontenac's main gymnasium while Hogan Prep (11-6) faces Baxter Springs (5-3) at the same time in the old gym. The host Raiders (8-1) won their eighth consecutive game in beating the Lions 54-53.

The Tigers rolled out to a 10-2 lead with 1;45 left in the first quarter. Aleyah Chivers scored the final 5 points of the quarter to bring the Rams within 3 points.

Fort Scott started the second quarter with a 10-2 run that saw them go up 20-9. Hogan Prep got with 21-13 at the half.

The Rams' only point of the third came on a Kierra Isaiah free throw. After that, Ashley Cook sparked a 20-0 run to end the period. Cook scored 8 of her game-high 13 points in the period. Sidney Maycumber added 6 points, which she scored consecutively starting at the 1:13 mark to make it 44-14.

Breana Herriford scored Hogan Prep's only field goal of the half to start the final stanza. Jillian Lattimer scored a layup and Shelby Maycumber and Tiera Floyd each added a pair of free throws.

Sidney Maycumber finished with 10 points for the Tigers, who won for the fifth time in their last six games. Only three players scored for the Rams. Chivers finished with 9 points but didn't play a single minute of the second half. Herriford added 6 points.

Fort Scott allowed just 26 total points to Pittsburg in their meetings during the 2006-07 season. On Dec. 15, 2006, The Tigers walloped the Purple Dragons, 43-9. On Jan. 26, 2007, Fort Scott drubbed Pittsburg, 49-17. These were the last two games in which the Tigers allowed fewer than 20 points prior to Thursday night.
